Recovered from the Past

For the last year I have been involved in a research project documenting the history of my maternal grandmother. Born in Poland in 1917, Z. grew up in Warszawa in a mostly secular middle-class Jewish family. Z. spoke German, Polish and French by the time she finished high school.Z. remembers the day the Nazi bombing of Warszawa began, an event which would signal the beginning of the destruction of her family and homeland and her eventual life on the other side of the world.
